The end of an era: Bonds factory closes

24 February 2010

The Bonds factory at Unanderra in southern Wollongong, NSW has received formal notice it will close within six weeks, spelling the end of questions over the future for around 200 clothing workers. The move follows parent company Pacific Brands' controversial announcement in February 2009 of its intention to lay off 1,850 staff at plants around Australia.

The Bonds workers will now be able to leave without losing their long service leave entitlements if they secure other employment. State secretary of the Textile Clothing and Footwear Union Barry Tubner said the mood was one of "mixed emotions" on the day of the final notice.

"A large number of the women who work there were glad it was over; they finally knew what day it would be," he said.

what a shame this is considering that Pacific Brands are big enough to finance Bonds underwear here in Australia. Give the Australian public some Australian made items. Bonds(China made) prices in the stores are as costly, if not more, than other brands anyway.

The product was mainly bought for its manufactured in Australia label, and the quality that went with a local product .
